Packaging symbols in Spain by product type

Thankfully, some basics won’t change, making it easy to continue recycling correctly:

• Blue Bin: Still for paper and cardboard packaging (your cereal boxes, cardboard packaging)
• Brown Bin: Reserved for compostable packaging (compostable bags, eco-friendly cutlery)
• Green Bin: Glass goes here (wine bottles, cosmetic jars)

Separable packaging components

When packaging contains different materials that consumers can easily separate, each component should indicate its proper container. For example:

Symbol design options

Companies can select between two design versions based on available space, complying with the updated Spain EPR packaging labeling requirements:

New mandatory markings

• Reusable Packaging: Packaging must clearly state if it’s reusable and include a symbol linked to the Deposit Return System (SDDR). This helps easily identify bottles or containers you can reuse.
• Compostable Packaging: Must clearly display the message “do not discard in the environment” and have a certification (like UNE EN 13432:2001) to guarantee it breaks down naturally.

Digital marking limitations

While QR codes might seem convenient, the Ministry has clarified that digital marking cannot replace physical text and images. QR codes aren’t considered clearly visible or easily readable by all consumers, though some exceptions exist for multilingual packaging and products with existing QR codes.

Special rules for small packaging

There’s no minimum size exemption – all packaging must comply. However, very small packages, where physical marking isn’t feasible, are exempt from displaying recycling information.

Optional additional information

To enhance transparency and consumer awareness, companies may optionally include:

• Companies may optionally include the Green Dot symbol, demonstrating their participation in EPR in Spain, and enhancing transparency.
• Details on the material composition of the packaging.
• Certified percentage of recyclability from an independent external entity.
• Verified information about the amount of recycled material incorporated into the packaging.

Implementation timeline explained

The Spain EPR packaging labeling requirements apply to packaging first released on the Spanish market from January 1, 2025 onward. Products already in the market before December 31, 2024, don’t require marking.
Additionally, products labeled before January 1, 2025, can be commercialized for up to 6 months after the deadline, providing businesses with transition flexibility.
